BeeWall

Micro-Paywall, Memberships & Reader Tips

Some readers will pay. Give them a way.

A small share of your audience already values your work enough to pay for it. Right now they have no way to, because the only options on offer are a ₹500 subscription they will not take or a PayPal button they cannot use. BeeWall gives them a ₹10 UPI tap instead.

The problem

What this is costing you right now

01

A hard paywall loses almost everyone

Put a subscription in front of an article and the overwhelming majority of Indian readers leave.

02

A "Support us" button nobody in India can use

PayPal, international cards, a foreign-currency minimum.

03

Your most loyal reader has no way to give you more than a pageview

Thirty visits a month, eighty articles read, shares your work to their group every week.

How it works

What BeeWall actually does

No black box. Here is the whole mechanism, step by step.

BeeWall — how it works

  1. 1

Readers are scored by engagement, on their own device

Visit frequency, articles read, scroll depth — anonymous signals kept on-device. Nobody is profiled and nothing about this needs a login.

  2. 2

Casual readers see exactly what they see today

First-time and occasional visitors get your normal page and your full ad stack. No prompt, no wall, no interruption. Asking a stranger for money is how you get neither the money nor the reader.

  3. 3

Loyal readers get a quiet offer at a natural moment

At the end of an article they finished, or between parts of a series they are following. Not on arrival, not mid-sentence, and never more than once in a session.

  4. 4

Three ways to pay, all one tap

A ₹5–₹20 UPI micro-unlock for a premium piece, a monthly membership with ad-light reading, or a tip jar for people who just want to say thanks. UPI intent opens GPay, PhonePe or Paytm directly — no card, no account creation.

  5. 5

Members are remembered, and reader revenue sits next to ad revenue

Access persists by signed cookie, optionally linked to a phone number across devices. One dashboard shows both revenue lines together, because the real question is always whether the total went up.

Notice what is missing: no step where a stranger is stopped. The default configuration never blocks content for anyone.
  • UPI-first, ₹5 minimum no card, no signup
  • Blocking off by default tips and metering first
  • SEO-safe metering flexible-sampling compliant
  • Ads keep running for non-payers, unchanged

below-article native grid

The offer sits at the end of an article a reader actually finished — below the content, never over it.

The ad slots above it keep serving. Reader revenue is additive here, not a replacement for the ad stack and not a hostage negotiation.

Specifications

Full technical specification

Publishers compare specifications, not adjectives. Everything is here, including what depends on partners we do not control.

Wall engine

Wall engine
Wall modes Metered (N free articles per month), keyed (only articles you tag premium), or off entirely. Per-site configuration. Off is a legitimate permanent choice — plenty of publishers should run tips only.
Trigger logic Engagement-based, never on a first visit and never mid-article. One prompt per session maximum. A reader who dismisses it is not asked again that day.
SEO safety Crawlers receive a structured preview per Google's paywalled-content guidance, and metering follows flexible sampling. Implemented this way or not implemented — a paywall that costs you search traffic has taken more than it gave.

Payments & access

Payments & access
Payments UPI intent flow (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm) with a QR fallback. ₹5 minimum, no card and no account creation required. Gateway integration is abstracted behind a provider layer — Razorpay/Cashfree-class partners are planned integrations, subject to their own onboarding.
Access & identity Instant unlock via signed cookie, with optional phone-linked access so a reader who paid on mobile is still a member on desktop. No password, no account wall in front of the payment.
Membership tiers Supporter, member and patron levels with a perks engine: ad-light reading via a BeeOS flag, members-only articles, and a badge in comments through BeeEngage. Churn-save flows offer a pause rather than only a cancel button.

Membership & ethics

Membership & ethics
Publisher finance GST and invoicing notes surfaced per transaction, and payouts on the same fast cycle as the rest of BeeOS. Reader money that sits in an intermediary for ninety days is not reader revenue yet.
Ethics guardrails Content blocking is off by default and clearly flagged when enabled. The full ad stack keeps serving to non-payers. Copy templates are respectful by construction — there are no guilt-tripping variants to pick from, because the ones that convert best short-term are the ones that cost you the reader.

Some capabilities depend on third-party approvals and platform policies that are not ours to promise. Where that is the case, the spec above says so explicitly.

Expected difference

+2–10% of revenue benchmark 1

The revenue mix shifts from 100% advertising to roughly 92% advertising plus 8% reader revenue at the middle of the benchmark range — additive, not a substitution.

+2–10%

Reported share of revenue from direct reader payments benchmark 1

Loyal-audience and niche sites sit at the top; general news at the bottom.

₹5

Minimum a reader can pay

Volume logic: ₹10 from thousands beats ₹500 from dozens in this market.

Off

Content blocking, by default

Same standing as BeeShield. You enable it knowingly or not at all.

Being straight with you: This will be a small number for most publishers and we are not going to dress it up. Two to ten percent of revenue is real money, but it is not a replacement for advertising and any vendor telling an Indian publisher that reader revenue will carry them is selling something. What it is: revenue that does not depend on the ad market at all, from the readers least likely to ever leave.

Questions

BeeWall — frequently asked

Not if it is implemented to their guidance. Crawlers get a structured preview of paywalled content and metering follows flexible sampling, which is the documented compliant pattern. BeeWall implements it that way or not at all — a paywall that quietly costs you search traffic has taken more than it gave.

Because the arithmetic in this market runs the other way round. ₹10 from four thousand readers beats ₹500 from forty, and the ₹10 ask converts at a rate the ₹500 ask never will. Volume with a low barrier is the model that fits Indian audiences; importing a Western subscription price point is how most attempts here have failed.

Yes, and for a lot of publishers that is the right configuration permanently. The wall is optional, content blocking is off by default, and tip-jar mode asks nothing of readers who do not want to give anything.

Members can get an ad-light experience, which does cost you some ad revenue from them — that is the trade you are choosing to make, and the dashboard shows both lines so you can see whether the total actually went up. Non-payers see your full ad stack, unchanged.

On the same fast payment cycle as the rest of BeeOS. Reader money sitting in an intermediary for ninety days is not reader revenue yet, and we are not going to be one more link in that chain.

Under active development as part of BeeOS Module 3. Payment gateway integrations need their own onboarding, which is real work with timelines we do not fully control. Join early access for priority onboarding.

Module 3 · Reader Revenue

The rest of the module

Modules 1 and 2 monetize attention with ads. Module 3 monetizes the reader relationship directly — commerce commissions, payments readers choose to make, and an email list you actually own.
