BeeShield

Adblock Revenue Recovery

One in three visitors pays you nothing. Recover them respectfully.

Adblock users read your work and cost you bandwidth while contributing nothing. Most publishers respond with a hostile wall, or with nothing at all. BeeShield starts by simply measuring the gap, then gives you a ladder of recovery options — and you decide how far up it you are willing to go.

+5–15% Expected recovery, depending on your adblock rate benchmark 1

The problem

What this is costing you right now

01

Adblock users take everything and contribute nothing

They consume the same bandwidth, the same servers and the same journalism as everybody else, and the economics that pay for all of it exclude them entirely.

02

Aggressive anti-adblock walls create hate and bounce

"Disable your adblocker to continue" converts a small percentage and loses the rest, permanently and often loudly.

03

Most Indian publishers do not even measure their adblock rate

Ask a publisher what percentage of their traffic blocks ads and you will usually get a guess.

How it works

What BeeShield actually does

No black box. Here is the whole mechanism, step by step.

BeeShield — how it works

  1. 1

    Detect, accurately

Multi-signal detection — bait elements plus network signals — with an explicit false-positive guard. Wrongly deciding a normal reader is blocking ads and showing them a message is worse than missing a real blocker.

  2. 2

Measure and report first, before anything else

The first thing BeeShield does is tell you your adblock rate by geo, device and section, daily. That number alone is often the whole value — it tells you whether this is a 4% problem you should ignore or a 35% problem you should act on.

  3. 3

    Rung one: say something honest

A polite, dismissible message explaining that ads pay for the work. No countdown, no guilt-tripping, no fake urgency. A meaningful number of people whitelist when simply asked, and the ones who do not still get to read.

  4. 4

Rung two: serve light ads that meet the Acceptable Ads standard

Non-intrusive formats delivered from your own domain via a server-side path. This is a recognised industry framework rather than a trick: the standard exists precisely because most blocking users object to intrusive ads, not to all ads.

  5. 5

Rung three and beyond, entirely your call

An optional whitelist request, or an optional micro-support link for readers who would rather contribute directly. Content is never blocked by default, and turning that on is a decision you make deliberately — not a setting we ship enabled.

Steps 1 and 2 run on their own — you can measure your adblock rate and stop there. Everything from step 3 onward is opt-in, per rung.
  • Measure first daily rate by geo
  • Acceptable Ads mode an industry framework
  • Content blocking off by default, always
  • Bounce delta reported both sides of the trade

Specifications

Full technical specification

Publishers compare specifications, not adjectives. Everything is here, including what depends on partners we do not control.

Detect & measure

Detect & measure
Detection Hybrid of baited-class and network-signal detection, with a false-positive guard. Daily adblock-rate reporting broken down by geo, device and section.
Recovery ladder Four rungs, each independently switchable: (1) polite value message, (2) Acceptable Ads standard compliance mode with light non-intrusive formats, (3) whitelist request, (4) micro-support link. You choose which rungs are active.

Recovery paths

Recovery paths
Server-side delivery Ads served from your own first-party domain rather than a known ad host. This is what makes recovery technically work, and it is used in compliance mode — light, non-intrusive formats — rather than to force the same ad load a reader already declined.
Messaging Respectful templates only. No guilt-tripping copy, no countdown timers, no fake system dialogs, no dark patterns. Dismissible, frequency-capped, and never shown to the same reader repeatedly in a session.
Content blocking Off by default and clearly flagged when you turn it on. This is the single setting most likely to damage your brand, and it is not going to be enabled quietly on your behalf.

Control & ethics

Control & ethics
Configuration & testing Per-site ladder configuration, message frequency caps, and full A/B testing through BeeLab — with bounce rate as a guardrail metric, because a recovery strategy that costs you readers is not recovery.
Reporting Adblock rate, recovered impressions, recovered revenue, message conversion rate, and the bounce-rate delta on readers who saw a message versus those who did not. Both sides of the trade, on the same screen.
Our ethics line We recover revenue with respect. No content hostage-taking by default. If a reader has clearly told you they do not want ads, the answer is a better ad experience or a different ask — not an escalating fight.

Some capabilities depend on third-party approvals and platform policies that are not ours to promise. Where that is the case, the spec above says so explicitly.

Expected impact

What the industry reports

Every number below is an industry benchmark published by a third party. BeeOS has not shipped, so none of these are results we have produced.

+15% range +5–15%

Expected recovery, depending entirely on your own adblock rate benchmark 1

A site at 6% should measure and do nothing else. A site at 35% has a real hole worth working on carefully.

Expected difference

+5–15% recovery benchmark 1

A portion of blocking users, never all of them — and the ones you reach by fighting tend not to come back.

30%+

Share of users running adblockers in many geographies benchmark 1

Higher on tech, finance and gaming audiences; lower on general news.

+5–15%

Expected revenue recovery from a portion of those users benchmark 1

A portion — recovery paths never reach everyone, and should not.

Off

Content blocking, by default

Deliberate. You turn it on knowingly or not at all.

Being straight with you: How much you recover depends almost entirely on your adblock rate, which is why the product measures before it recovers. A site at 6% should probably do nothing but keep watching the number. A site at 35% has a serious hole and it is worth working on carefully. Either way, the ceiling here is lower than aggressive vendors claim: recovery paths reach some of those users, never all, and the ones you reach by fighting them tend not to come back.

Questions

BeeShield — frequently asked

It depends entirely on how you do it, and we think the honest answer includes the counter-argument. Acceptable Ads is an established industry framework built on the evidence that most blocking users object to intrusive advertising rather than to all advertising — serving light, non-intrusive ads to them is a reasonable position. Overriding a reader's clearly expressed choice with an escalating wall is a different thing, which is why content blocking is off by default and stays your decision.

To a degree, always — this is a cat-and-mouse game and any vendor who tells you otherwise is selling. First-party serving and compliance mode reduce how often you are targeted, because non-intrusive first-party ads are much less interesting to filter list maintainers than an obvious circumvention script. Expect recovery rates to move over time rather than hold a fixed number.

Yes, and for a lot of publishers that is the right first step. Detection and reporting run independently of every recovery rung. Knowing you are at 8% rather than the 25% you feared is a genuinely useful outcome, and it costs your readers nothing.

That is the failure mode we care most about, because showing an anti-adblock message to someone who is not blocking anything is both annoying and embarrassing. Detection uses multiple signals with an explicit false-positive guard, and the false-positive rate is something we would report rather than hide.

Possibly — which is why bounce-rate delta is reported next to recovered revenue rather than separately, and why the whole ladder is A/B testable through BeeLab with bounce as a guardrail. If a rung is costing you more in readers than it returns in revenue, you should be able to see that in a fortnight, not a year.
